Introduction to the School of Civil Engineering

Harbin Institute of Technology, Civil Engineering School, can trace its history back to the Department of Railway Architecture of the Sino-Russian Industrial School in Harbin, founded in 1920, which was one of the first two majors when Harbin Institute of Technology was established. The Department of Industrial and Civil Architecture, one of the earliest in New China, was established in 1950, and began enrolling tutor system graduate students and graduate classes in 1952. In 1986, it was granted the right to confer doctoral degrees and has doctoral mobile stations in Civil Engineering and Mechanics. In 1998, it was one of the first batch of units in China authorized to confer doctoral degrees in Civil Engineering. In 2000, it was approved to establish the position of National High-Level Talents distinguished professor. In 1995, the Civil Engineering major passed the national professional certification evaluation with excellent results. In 2000 and 2005, it passed the national professional re-evaluation every five years with excellent results. In 2021, the Civil Engineering major passed the engineering education certification. In 2001 and 2007, the Structural Engineering discipline and the Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Protection Engineering discipline were approved as national second-level key disciplines. In 2007, Civil Engineering was approved as a national first-level key discipline. The Civil Engineering and Mechanics disciplines have always been among the top in the Ministry of Education's discipline assessments: in the first and second rounds of discipline assessments, Civil Engineering and Mechanics both ranked third; in the third round of discipline assessments, Civil Engineering ranked second and Mechanics tied for first; in the fourth round of discipline assessments, Civil Engineering and Mechanics both ranked A. In 2017, both Civil Engineering and Mechanics were selected for the Double First-Class discipline construction list. In the US News 2021 ranking, Civil Engineering ranked 16th globally.

The School of Civil Engineering offers four undergraduate majors: Civil Engineering, Urban Underground Space Engineering, Engineering Management, and Intelligent Construction. The Civil Engineering major has two professional directions, Building Engineering and Civil Engineering Materials, as well as an elite class of Civil Engineering (targeted for 4+2 training) and an international student class. The Civil Engineering, Engineering Management, and Urban Underground Space Engineering majors have all been selected as national first-class undergraduate majors.

In terms of graduate education, the school can confer Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering and Mechanics, as well as engineering Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering. The secondary disciplines include Structural Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Reduction Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, Civil Engineering Materials, Civil Engineering Construction and Management, Engineering Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, and the cross-disciplinary field of Smart City. The school also enrolls part-time Master of Engineering Management (MEM) students and part-time Ph.D. students in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering.

The School of Civil Engineering has 166 faculty members, including 119 full-time teachers, 55 professors, and 51 associate professors, forming a reasonable age and knowledge structure of the teaching staff. It has five academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, including Wang Guangyuan, Shen Shizhao, Xie Lili, Ou Jinping, and Li Hui, as well as more than 20 national high-level talents/national famous teachers and six high-level scientific research and teaching teams such as the National Natural Science Foundation innovation group and national-level teaching team.

The School of Civil Engineering has nine provincial and ministerial key laboratories, including the National Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Cold Region Low-Carbon Building Technology, the Key Laboratory of Structural Engineering Catastrophe and Control of the Ministry of Education, and the Key Laboratory of Civil Engineering Intelligent Disaster Prevention and Reduction of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It also has three international cooperation platforms, such as the China-ASEAN Science and Technology Research Institute Civil Engineering Branch, and four national education and teaching platforms, such as the National Civil Engineering Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center.
